Young Adult Police Legatees fundraise for humanitarian trip to Cambodia - 9 News Melbourne with Gillian Lantouris
Gillian Lantouris from 9 News Melbourne caught up with an amazing group of Young Adult Police Legatees (VPAL's), and VPL Community Engagement Coordinator Bob Raaymakers APM, at Highball Cars and Coffee held at Bosch Australia on Sunday 20 August. Gillian was thrilled to find out more about the VPAL's upcoming humanitarian/personal development experience, which as part of Rotary Internationals ‘World of Difference’ program, will support local villages in Cambodia this November.
As part of their personal development, VPAL’s are conducting their own fundraising initiatives to raise funds to support these local Cambodian villages, including fundraising at the Highball Cars and Coffee event at Bosch HQ.
"In November 2023, I was fortunate to accompany nineteen Victoria Police Legatees (aged 18-26) to Cambodia on an incredible personal development, humanitarian experience, undertaken in conjunction with Rotary International's ‘World of Difference Experience’ program.
As a group we raised an outstanding $33,000 to support several humanitarian projects in villages surrounding Siem Reap. It was a trip with purpose, and everyone came prepared to give their all and embrace every activity. We dug holes for toilets and cleaned sand for water filters. We purchased and rode bikes into schools to donate to children who walked up to 10km each day to receive an education. We gave English lessons, danced, sung, made paper planes, taught dental hygiene, supported local villages where the extreme poverty was confronting and boy… did we sweat!
This trip was life changing. It pushed everyone out of their comfort zone and built resilience. I watched each police legatee become a leader, show compassion, and give a piece of their heart to the Cambodians we helped.
I’m proud to say that we discovered that although we can’t change the world, we can change the world for one family. And we did this on numerous occasions."
- Victoria Police Legacy Chair, Detective Inspector Kate O’Neill
