VPL was formally established on 6th February 1980 and was originally formed by a number of police members which included our founding President Inspector Bryan Kelly QPM, and founding Secretary Chief Superintendent Peter Ryan AM APM with the support of then Chief Commissioner S.I. (Mick) Miller AO LVO QPM to care for police families who lost a loved one. Those humble beginnings marked the start our not-for-profit organisation, which continues to be mainly funded through contributions from the newest Police & Protective Services Officer Recruit to the Chief Commissioner.
Throughout our 43 years we have maintained our commitment to support police families with connection events, welfare services, advocacy and other services. We’re proud of the support from Police & Protective Services Officers, along with our supporters, partners and sponsors to ensure that those who have served are never forgotten and those who serve who may lose a loved one, along with their children are supported.
Just for fun, we've pulled the original Victoria Police Legacy logo out of our archives, which is based on the old street police lamp that appeared at police stations - what a blast from the past!
